About this recipe
What is a traditional Caprese salad made of?
A true Caprese salad is made with just a few high-quality ingredients. Ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, fragrant basil, and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil. That’s it! Simplicity is what makes it so good.
What type of mozzarella is best for Caprese salad?
For authentic flavour and a creamy texture, use buffalo mozzarella. It has a rich, slightly tangy taste that pairs beautifully with sweet tomatoes and fresh basil.
Can I prepare Caprese salad in advance?
You can slice the ingredients ahead of time, but it’s best to assemble just before serving. This keeps the tomatoes juicy and the mozzarella soft and fresh.
What tomatoes work best for Caprese salad?
Use ripe, in-season tomatoes. Think heirloom, Roma, or truss varieties from our Produce section. The fresher the tomato, the better the flavour.
How do I elevate my Caprese salad?
Add a drizzle of balsamic glaze, a sprinkle of sea salt flakes, or even a few slices of prosciutto for a twist. You can also serve it on toasted sourdough for a light lunch.
